Wisdom

Summary

Where shall wisdom be found? Job’s ancient question receives its answer in Proverbs 8, where Wisdom is personified as present with God at creation — “when he marked out the foundations of the earth, I was beside him.” John identifies this Wisdom with the Logos: the one who became Jesus of Nazareth. This chapter traces divine wisdom from creation, through the Psalms and Proverbs, to Christ in whom “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” — the same eternal Word who, in the fullness of time, would enter history as Emmanuel.

Job asked the question that haunts every thoughtful person: "Where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?" (Job 28:12)[1] He surveyed all creation — the deep, the sea, the birds of the air — and concluded: "God understands its way, and he knows its place." Wisdom belongs to God alone.

Proverbs 8 gives Wisdom a voice. She was present with God before creation: "When he prepared the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep... I was beside him as a master craftsman; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always." (Proverbs 8:27–30)[2] This is not merely poetic personification — John identifies this eternal Wisdom with the Logos: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1)[3]

Paul states the identification directly: Christ is "the wisdom of God" (1 Corinthians 1:24)[4] and in him "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." (Colossians 2:3)[5] Every facet of divine wisdom — its creativity, its righteousness, its mercy — is concentrated in the person of Jesus Christ.

The practical beginning of that wisdom is reverence: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." (Proverbs 9:10)[6] Psalm 19 develops this: the law of Yahweh is perfect, making wise the simple; the testimony of Yahweh makes the inexperienced wise. (Psalm 19:7)[7] Engaging seriously with the Scriptures is the appointed path to divine wisdom.

In the future age, the glorified saints will participate in this wisdom. Daniel promises: "Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever." (Daniel 12:3)[8] The "Sun of Righteousness" rising with healing in his wings (Malachi 4:2)[9] will illuminate a world that has walked in the darkness of human wisdom — and the redeemed will share that light with the nations.
